Marilyn drove us through the crazy Dakar traffic again this morning to the port where we boarded a ferry (I am understating to say it was crowded) to Goree Island. Goree was historically one of the two major ports in Africa that served as the center for the West Africa Slave trade. It is a very picturesque island with little restaurants, small hotels, craftspeople selling their wares and local residents. The most powerful part of this visit is to the Slave House. The Maison would hold 100-200 people who were separated into rooms for men, women, children and virgins...The people would be weighed, evaluated and shipped across the ocean. It was very moving to stand in the "doorway of no return" through which untold numbers of people were torn from their homeland. http://www.congo-pages.org/senegal/Goree.htm
